The Astronaut (Full Review SXSW)

Photographs of the Premiere below

The Astronaut is a visually stunning science fiction film that draws inspiration from classic works in the same genre. With meticulous care and love, the film follows the journey of an astronaut, portrayed masterfully by Kate Mara, who may have brought something Extra-Terrestrial back to Earth. Mara’s performance stands out as a remarkable highlight, delivering a captivating and enchanting portrayal of someone who lives and breathes space. You can tell that her chracter is extremely passionate about her career choice. So much so that she put's it in front of everything else in her life. The film strikes a delicate balance between wonder and terror, weaving a captivating narrative that explores the themes of family and perseverance. The filmmakers’ decision to reveal key plot points in the third act proves highly effective, creating a sense of anticipation and suspense that builds gradually throughout the film. The climax, akin to a ticking time bomb, unfolds with a gradual intensification of tension, culminating in a satisfying and unexpected explosion of reveals.

Director Jess Varley demonstrates impressive skill, showcasing the film’s touching storyline and breathtaking cinematography. Each shot is carefully choreographed, evoking a palpable sense of tension and delivering effective scares. While the script could benefit from deeper character development, Kate Mara’s performance infuses the film with an emotional depth that is essential for its success. Despite some budgetary constraints, the filmmakers’ commitment to visual spectacle is commendable. While certain elements may not have been to everyone’s taste, the overall impact of the film remains positive. As discussed during the Q&A session, the production of The Astronaut was a true testament to teamwork and collaboration. The filmmakers’ determination to achieve their vision is achieved with that teamwork. They get that success in delivering a compelling and entertaining film, is a testament to their hard work and dedication. They pulled off so many great scenes that would seem impossible to pull off without a higher budget. This team pulled it off.

The Astronaut draws inspiration from numerous cinematic works, paying homage to the genre’s pioneers. While it acknowledges its predecessors, it stands on its own merits with an original narrative and creative plot twists. However, the film’s abundance of many ideas may have diminished its impact. The movie’s narrative revolves around a recurring sequence of events that transpire nightly, which left breathing room for the audience to connect with the family during the day. I do have to say that this movie doesn't fall into the terrible tropes of movies of the past. In many sci-fi narratives, female protagonists are often portrayed as insane, when they talk about their supernatural experiences. However, this film subverts this trope by presenting a rare instance where the husband  believes her. This departure from the norm adds depth to the story and really empowers our protagonist. Something I wish to see more of in future movies to come. Always great to see this perspective and also see a female director implenting this message. This main chracter is a badass from start to finish and thats fantastic.

The film’s strong female lead, portrayed by Kate Mara, is a formidable character from beginning to end. Mara’s performance breathes life into the role, making her a compelling and relatable protagonist. The film’s sequences are generally effective, and the inclusion of subtle Easter eggs enhances the viewing experience for film lovers of the genre. While the creature design may not be flawless, it effectively conveys the film’s intentions behind them. Despite its shortcomings of the visuals, The Astronaut offers an enjoyable viewing experience given its limited budget. Mara’s performance truly elevates the film, making it a worthwhile watch for her alone. Add in great camera movement and cinematography and you have one well made movie. The film’s potential for future rewatching is promising, and I eagerly anticipate seeing the director’s next endeavor. A fun watch that has a ton to offer.
